Il Celtis australis è un grande albero a foglia caduca, con chioma arrotondata ed espansa, di medio-grandi dimensioni. Il fusto è slanciato con costolature evidenti alla base. La corteccia è di color grigio chiaro, liscia. Le foglie sonolanceolate-acuminate, asimmetriche alla base, seghettate, verde-grigio e ruvide sulla pagina superiore, tomentose di sotto. Il frutto è una piccola drupa edule, di circa 1 cm di diametro, dapprima verde poi nerastra a maturità.
