La Catalpa bignonioides è un albero ornamentale di medie dimensioni a crescita rapida, raggiunge i 15 m di altezza. Pianta con chioma rotondeggiante, caratteristica per le grandi foglie, la vistosa fioritura e i lunghi frutti chiamati sigari. Le foglie sono molto grandi, circa 25 cm, ovali-cordiformi, leggermente lobate, verde chiaro e pubescenti sulla pagina inferiore. Le infiorescenze, a grappolo eretto, sbocciano a giugno-luglio e sono costituite da fiori campanulati bianchi punteggiati di giallo e rosso. I frutti sono capsule lunghe da 15 a 40 cm, simili a baccelli, dapprima verdi poi marroni, e persistono sulla pianta sino alla fioritura dell’anno successivo.
