Pianta molto decorativa durante tutto l'anno, ma soprattutto durante la fioritura, costituita da originali infiorescenze cilindriche di colore giallo paglierino seguite da ancora più bizzarri frutti, che ricordano vagamente delle pigne. Predilige terreni leggermente acidi, resiste alla siccità, al freddo e ai venti salmastri.
